Delivery Apps Take a Cut of Orders You Already Won. Can Your Website Keep Them?

Delivery apps take a share of every order they bring you. In Thailand, Grab and LINE MAN now handle close to 90% of food delivery ¹. In the United Kingdom, Uber Eats charges 30% to 33% on orders its couriers deliver ².

Some of those orders come from guests who already knew your name. When a delivery app says it works with a restaurant, Google lists it on the restaurant's profile automatically ³. A guest searches for you, taps to order, and pays through the app.

In late October 2026, Google gave restaurants direct control. You can now switch off any delivery app on your Google Business Profile, for pickup and delivery separately, in every country ⁴⁵. You can also add your own ordering link and set your preferred ordering option ³.

That is a free route to direct orders, and some chains in Southeast Asia already sell outside the big apps. In the Philippines, their own delivery channels account for a significant amount of delivery sales ¹. In Malaysia, self pickup is growing among some chains ¹.

Diners are willing. In Popmenu's 2026 surveys of US consumers, 94% preferred ordering on a restaurant's own website ⁶. Popmenu sells ordering software, but the reasons are practical: easier customizing, lower prices and a better experience ⁶.

The risk sits on your website. In the same surveys, 54% of guests were less likely to order if they had to leave the restaurant's site ⁶. 51% said the same if ordering on a phone was hard ⁶.

So is your website ready? If a guest can order on a phone in a few taps without leaving your site, yes: switch off the apps that cost you most. If your order button opens a PDF menu or a slow page, fix the website first.

Until then, leave the apps on, because a commission costs less than a lost order. Even after, keep the one app your regulars use, with your own link beside it. Google notes that diners "often stick to the platforms where they hold active subscriptions or stored payment details" ⁵.
